New year, new webhost, new me? Honestly I have no idea why I didn't touch this place for like 2 years. I know for a little while there I forgot this place even existed, but beyond that I don't have much of an excuse. Perhaps I was bored or just lacking motivation. Well with how things have been for the last year or two, I have a stronger drive than ever to get away from the mainstream areas of the internet, and retreat into something simpler. This site was originally supposed to be that, but I kind of left it to decay for a while. Luckily nothing ever really dissapears on the internet so it's exactly how I left it, just sat here waiting for me to make a return.
So now what? For one I hate the design of this place so I guess my first order of buisness is to clean it up. I'm no artist, as you may be able to tell by the uh... *gestures broadly at the current deisgn* whatever this is, so don't go expecting some masterpiece. All I have at the moment is a direction. I've been very into 90's cyberpunk so I'm thinking something with that theme. Think ghost in the shell, or maybe blade runner. What this will look like precisly I have no clue, so unless you are viewing this post from the future, I guess you will just have to wait. Who am I kidding? I am the only one who will be reading this.
Now what about this whole change in webhost thing? Well I was using github previously however I guess I got bored of using that? I mean I prefer to not use large corporations to host any of my stuff if plausable and the only reason I was using github in the firstplace was that I thought it might offer me some more flexability. The truth is however, in both cases, here or with github, the free tier is only static site hosting so it doesn't really matter. That's also why my visitor counter is broken at the moment. Like it was ever functional lol. Anyways I decided if I'm not getting any benifit, I'd much rather use a provider that doesn't try and scrape every possible piece of data from my site so I went ahead and nuked my github and moved here. I guess for anything more complex that needs backend with storage I will just use one of the million spare computers I have lying around my place and open a port on my router to allow traffic from this site. Is this safe, or smart? Not at all, but I imagine if I segment the computer on my network properly and setup apropriate firewall rules, I can mitigate 99% of the risk. As long as I am not vunreable to automated attacks that flood the internet, I doubt someone would wast the resources on a more sophistocated attack on my tiny corner of the web. I guess we shall see.
Lastly, I am going to make this place more interactive. I really want a guest book, not that anyone visits, but still. Just knowing I made that kind of feature and it works is reward enough in itself. Aside from that, some small little web games would be neat. Maybe some background music or sound effects, just things that enhance the experience in little ways. It feels far too boring to browse at the moment. Really should add an index of interesting websites I use or like as well. Maybe make this place a big collection of all my favorite things on the internet. I guess time will tell what I ultimatly end up doing with it. Historically I have not been kind to this place. If you think of it like a garden of sorts, or a bonzai tree maybe, I have let the damn thing die. Not maintained it at all. Some web admin I've turned out to be. Anyways, that's all I wanted to write for now. Till next time. Hopefully not another 2 years :)
